Knud Holscher has shaped d line from the very beginning, designing the first coordinated collection in 1971. His approach was grounded in a clear principle: design should be modest, functional, and made to last. Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture and later working in Arne Jacobsen’s studio, he developed a deep understanding of proportion, precision, and architectural cohesion. Early in his career, this approach took form through his role as lead architect on St Catherine's College in Oxford. It was here the vision behind d line began to emerge. Holscher’s characteristic bends evolved into the iconic L- and U-shaped handles, defined by their balanced geometry, restrained expression, and comfortable grip. Together, they formed the foundation of a collection that continues to endure across generations of architecture.

Knud Holscher developed the collection as a unified system. The design language is simple, balanced, and adaptable — created to integrate naturally into architecture rather than compete with it. Nothing is exaggerated, and nothing demands attention for its own sake. Instead, the collection supports the atmosphere and function of the spaces it becomes part of. Today, we continue this thinking by bringing the entire collection together under one unified d line identity. We have moved away from separate series and fragmented design directions in favor of a more coherent approach. The result is a consistent framework that gives architects greater flexibility and clarity across projects.
